Crystals and Other Rocks

  • Crystals - Silver Crystals, Rainbow Crystals, Crystal Tokyo...
  • Minerals - Where did all those weird names come from?

Crystals

Well, first of all, what is a crystal? A Webster's dictionary defines a crystal as the following: the solid state of a pure substance or mixture, characterized by a regular ordered arrangement of the consituent atoms, usually having external plane faces meeting at angles characteristic of the substance.

Ummm...yeah. Anyway, a crystal is basically a shiny stone. Lots of different kinds of these shiny stones appear throughout Sailor Moon.

First there's Queen Beryl's crystal ball. It was a really cool thing. She would wave her hands over it, and images appeared inside. She sat on her throne all day, watching the world in her tiny sphere-o'-glass. And based on what she saw, she ordered her minions to carry out tasks...some which involved more crystals.

Jaedite was ordered to capture energy for the Negaverse. When the Sailor Scouts got in the way, Queen Beryl ordered Jedite to fight and defeat them. When he failed, Queen Beryl placed him into an eternal sleep by encasing him in a large crystal.

Neflite was under orders from Queen Beryl to continue Jedite's mission of capturing human energy. To do this, Neflite employed the powers of a Star Crystal. The Star Crystal was a sort of sensor device that allowed Neflite to locate humans that would produce a large amount of energy.

By this point, the Negaverse had collected enough energy to create a new crystal, the Dark Crystal. Queen Beryl issued it to Zoycite, ordering her to use it to find the seven rainbow crystals. Inside each crystal was one of the Seven Shadows, powerful warriors from the Silver Millenium. The rainbow crystals (and Shadows) were hidden in normal humans (and in one case, a cat): (listed in order by episode)

  • Game Machine Man, hidden inside a kid named Joe
  • Bo Bo the Vulture, hidden inside a priest
  • Bumboo, hidden inside Greg
  • Veena, hidden inside a woman named Peggy Jones
  • Techniclon, hidden inside Andrew's girlfriend, Rita
  • Pox, hidden inside Raye's grandpa
  • Akan, hidden inside a fat cat named Hercules

More importantly, the discovery of the rainbow crystals would lead to what is undoubtedly the biggest crystal of all: the one that falls out of Princess Serena's eye...well, something like that. In episode 30 ("A Crystal Clear Destiny"), Sailor Moon is found weeping over Tuxedo Mask's wounded body. A tear falls from her eye. Elsewhere, Malachite is gloating over his apparent victory and capture of the rainbow crystals. But, the crystals suddenly shoot up into the sky and fly away. They find their way to Sailor Moon, where they all connect together with Sailor Moon's teardrop...and become the Imperium Silver Crystal! And, of course, a few episodes later Princess Serena used that crystal to defeat Queen Beryl and the Negaverse for the final time.

During the Alan/Ann portion of the R series, each of the Scouts powered up and obtained new powers, which were conjured up by pulling out their transformation pens and calling for their Star Power; except for Sailor Moon who used the Imperium Silver Crystal in her brooch and shouted, "Moon Crystal Power!"

The 2nd part of the Sailor Moon R series brought young Rini into the story. She was a girl from Crystal Tokyo, over one thousand years into the future. Her purpose was to bring the Imperium Silver Crystal back to the future in order to defeat the Wiseman. Representing the future NegaMoon, Rubeus and the Four Sisters also traveled into the past. Their goal was to capture Rini, and also to destroy the future Crystal Tokyo by attacking the present-day Tokyo. To do this, they attacked various areas of the city, which they called Crystal Points, by filling them with "nega energy". Each attempt failed, of course. The sisters were all defeated, and turned good with the power of the Imperium Silver Crystal.

Minerals

Several of the Sailor Moon villains were named after minerals, as shown below. Character names from the Japanese version (that are different than the North American version) are in parentheses.
